Chicago is a 2002 American musical crime film based on the 1975 Broadway musical of the same name. It delves into the topics of stardom, controversy, and corruption in the Jazz Age in Chicago. Catherine Zeta-Jones, Renée Zellweger, and Richard Gere feature in the film. Roxie Hart (Zellweger) and Velma Kelly (Zeta-Jones) are two murderesses who end up in jail together in 1920s Chicago, awaiting trial. Roxie, a housewife, and Velma, a vaudevillian, compete for fame in order to avoid being hanged. Rob Marshall, who also choreographed the picture, makes his theatrical directing debut, while the screenplay was written by Bill Condon, with music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb. Chicago received critical acclaim and won six Academy Awards in 2003, including Best Picture, making it the first musical to do so since Oliver! in 1968.
